This Looks Cool

Here is how author Newt Newport describes this forthcoming product:
What is OpenQuest Classic?
In a nutshell OQ Classic is a version of OQ that is focused for Old Skool dungeon bashing and wilderness adventures. It is a shorter version of OQ about 100 pages long, rules + setting adventure. As well as cheerfully rubbing the nostalgia button for existing D100 players, the book is a short cheap focused introduction to fantasy roleplaying.

For owners of the existing OQ book it acts as a supplement with extra spells, magic items, monsters and adventures, which will take up roughly half the book.

Final book will be trade paper back sized (6”x9”), feature all new art, and be priced around £10-£12 print / £5-6 Pdf.

NONE OF THE NEW CONTENT WILL BE OGL.
THIS IS NOT INTENDED AS AN RQ2 RETRO CLONE, you will not find Hit Locations, Strike Ranks within its pages. The system is OQ, the only change of which is that it now uses a single magic system (based off Battle Magic)
More information available here.

I'm really looking forward to this!

  1. So, is it just OQ with the other magic systems removed?

  3. Why do they make mention that this is not OGL? What am I missing here?

That may be the essence of it, although there will be additional spells for Battle Magic (apparently, priests and sorcerers will be treated analogously to shamans, and so will not disappear altogether). There also will be additional magic items and monsters, so it looks like it will be OQ core minus some things (divine magic, sorcery, other stuff) and plus some things (more battle magic spells, magic items, and monsters).

If Newt notices this post, perhaps he'll provide more info. :)

The core OQ rules will remains OGL (I don't think that that can ever be undone). Thus the parts of OQ Classic that correspond to OQ core will remain OGL. OQ will remain OGL forever (just like S&W, etc.).

Only the new material will not be OGL (the new spells, magic items, monsters, etc.). Since that material will be Newt's own creation, I guess that he wants to maintain some kind of control over it. Again, if he sees this post, perhaps he will elaborate on this.

Personally, so long as OQ remains OGL, I have no problem with 'supplemental' material being non-OGL.

  6. Oh yeah: I love the cover for OQ Classic! (Superior to the OQ cover, IMO. "Less busy.")

I state this upfront in big captial letters because previously when I've announced I'm doing something based off OpenQuest, such as OpenQuest Modern (which is now known as The Compnay) I've had a barriage of emails which in essence have been asking me; "will the new rules be OGL? I'm not really interested in your new game, but I want the new rules for a game that I'm developing". This time out I wanted spare myself the whole indignity of explaining over many emails NO!

In one way yes - Combat and Skills are untouched (so far : I've not passed through peer review these chapters), so the core is there. You won't be reading it and going "this is'nt OQ"

But Character generation is now random, Magic although based of Battle Magic, folds in the bits of the other magic systems BM misses, plus adds new spells. And alongside 20 odd family favourites from OQ, I'm writting up 20 or so new monsters.

The setting and adventure is new as well.

I reckon the spilit should be 50/50 minimum between old/new material, but this could increase in favour of new if I get carried away ;)

  10. Had a happy writing afternoon on Sunday and a good chunk of the adventure is written :) So far its a standard "1st level" with small green-skined humaniod protagnonists to ease players into it, but this being d100 means there are some nasty tricks and traps to keep people on their toes. Also hints of the darkness that lies below - old RQ adventures often had a horror element and I'm keen to bring that into OQ Classic.

Cheers, it struck the basic 'you with your sword vs the skeletons' vibe that starting out inold skool RQ has .

As for the OQ cover, a new Jon Hodgeson cover is on the way ;)

I keep wanting to order the 'final edition' of OQ from Lulu, but you keep giving me reasons to postpone doing that! (Fixing the final typos, new Hodgeson cover...)

Well if things go to plan, you should be able to order the Final Final version of OQ early next week :)
