You can choose a background more than once (e.g., Barbarian 2, Thief 1, Mercenary 1).

Whenever attempting a non-combat related task that can somehow be tied to the background, you gain a bonus equal to the number of times you chose the background.

For example, a character with Barbarian 2 might get a +2 bonus when he attempts to forage for food in the wilderness. A character with Thief 1 gains a +1 bonus when attempting to pick a lock. A PC with Healer 3 gets a +3 bonus when looking for a particular root known to neutralize poison.

You can tie this in with the character's class (essentially his current "background") by allowing a bonus equal to 1/2 (round up) his current level. If you do this (and like my previous idea on task resolution) then use TNs of 7/11/15 as a base.

Some backgrounds (e.g., Gladiator, Mercenary, Pirate) might tempt you to allow combat bonuses. If you do, only allow one such bonus per background per combat. For example, a character with a background of Gladiator 2 might pull off a trick learned in the arena (throwing sand in his opponent's face), good for a +2 attack bonus on a single attack.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7600974191399728636.post-64534657511582334692009-06-27T11:56:22.868-04:002009-06-27T11:56:22.868-04:00Here is a rather cool way to combine my 'fight...Here is a rather cool way to combine my 'fighting styles' system and my 'background professions' system, devised by 'Age of Fable':
http://www.swordsandwizardry.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=1383&p=12487#p12430Akrasiahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08734103159691571156noreply@blogger.com
